The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) has selected Ed Ryland, Jr., President and CEO of ARVO Realty Advisors, to receive the Ronald H. Brown Leadership Award, an honor which recognizes individuals who have achieved significant results by promoting diversity, expanding minority business enterprise and demonstrating exceptional leadership in the public or private sector. Ryland and other awardees will be honored during a virtual ceremony of the 2021 National Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week to be held September 23, 2021, at 6 p.m.

The prestigious award was named for and inspired by the outstanding leadership of the late U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Ronald H. Brown. As the first African-American to serve as the Department’s Secretary, he was a staunch advocate for diversity and business expansion.

“I am extremely honored to be receiving the Ronald H. Brown Leadership Award, specifically because of its significance in expanding opportunities for the minority business community. My goal is to continue to focus on and tackle the many issues impacting minority entrepreneurs,” Ryland says.

Ryland boasts more than 25 years of expert knowledge and experience in real estate brokerage, consulting, and tenant and landlord representation. He is also a notable thought leader and community advocate. His philanthropy-meets-business model inspired him to create the Economic Development and Diversity Institute for the Houston Association of Realtors. Likewise, Ryland created the Houston Minority Supplier Development Council’s CEO Academy, a program that exposes minority business owners to the CEOs of major corporations to gain strategic thinking and leadership skills. Determined to continue his service to community and minority-owned companies, Ryland shared his extensive insight in his informative book, The Secrets to Building a Successful Minority-Owned Company. The accomplished real estate expert, community leader, entrepreneur and author is also the former National Vice Chair of the National Minority Business Enterprise Input Committee. His determination to address generational wealth gaps resulted in the appropriately titled Invest In My Own Community (IMOC), a program focusing on building capital within underserved and underinvested communities.
