GHBC & KHOU Collaboration Wins 2 Telly Awards for Pinnacle Broadcast
KHOU-TV took home two Telly Awards for its broadcast of the Greater Houston Black Chamber’s (GHBC) 27th Annual Pinnacle Awards. The Chamber partnered with KHOU-TV to produce a pre-recorded broadcast of the awards program, which was virtual in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Telly Awards annually showcases the best work created within television and across video, for all screens. Receiving over 12,000 entries from all 50 states and 5 continents, Telly Award winners represent work from some of the most respected advertising agencies, television stations, production companies and publishers from around the world.
The Pinnacle Awards production was led by Dale Lockett, who served as the producer, along with the Chamber’s former Chair of the Board Niles Dillard and publicist and writer, Misty Starks. KHOU-TV was recognized as a Silver winner in the General-Online D&I category and as a Bronze award winner in the General-Online Event category.
The Pinnacle’s theme was “Excellence Has Arrived: Black Businesses Take the Lead.” The program opened with a commissioned poem performed by notable spoken word artist Se7en the Poet. Viewers also enjoyed a rousing performance from vocalist Mary Griffin. The production included appearances from high profile leaders including Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Congressman Al Green, Mayor Sylvester Turner, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, Missouri City Mayor Robin Elackatt, National Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson, and entrepreneur Gerald Smith. There was also a cameo sports commentator and CBS News Special Correspondent James Brown. The broadcast focused on the achievements of local business owners and leaders and touched on the racial and social issues facing the Black community.
In addition to Lockett, Dillard and Starks, the Pinnacle planning committee included GHBC Interim President Carol Guess, Janette Hammond, Kyra Hardwick, Carmen Herrera, LaTyran Hilliard, Dale Lockett, Sheri Lawal-Price, Byron Lundy, Baylessia Mayes, Marguerite Williams and Jamila Winsey.
