‘Say Their Names’ Memorial Travels to Houston to Honor Black Lives Lost
HOUSTON, TX — September 26, 2020 — Houston, Texas, is the latest city to host the Say Their Names Memorial exhibit honoring Black Americans whose lives have been lost due to social injustice. The temporary exhibit will be housed at Emancipation Park, located at 3018 Emancipation Ave., and will be open to the public Tuesday, September 29 through Tuesday, October 13, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Houston installment is made possible thanks to local rapper, activist and philanthropist Trae Tha Truth, who will give remarks at the preview installation event. Other speakers will include Mayor Sylvester Turner, Ramon Manning, board chairman, Emancipation Park Conservancy, Emily Clarke, Dallas exhibit organizer and DeRonica Horn, Houston exhibit organizer.
The Say Their Names Memorial is a nationwide grassroots initiative featuring over 200 photos of Black victims whose lives were lost to racial injustice, police brutality and racism. The exhibition was started in Portland, OR, on Juneteenth 2020 by Say Their Names Memorial. The group shares photos and information with individuals and communities who want to create memorials in their own neighborhoods. It has been put up in over 25 locations nationwide.
“It is fitting that this exhibit will have a temporary home at Emancipation Park for the community to experience,” said Manning, board chairman, Emancipation Park Conservancy. “Amidst the racial unrest and challenges being faced in the African American community, this exhibit provides an opportunity to honor lives lost and start an open dialogue surrounding peaceful social reform in our country.”
Social distancing measures will be practiced. All visitors are asked to wear a mask to tour the exhibit.
